Connective Tissue Manipulation.
Carried out by the Physiotherapist with the maleable pads of the finger tips to shift one layer of skin on the level below. This motion creates a quick, quick, flex reflex, creating a reaction, which moves out through the connective tissue. The patient’s brain interpretes this impulse as if it were a ’slice’ or a ’scratch’. The tighter the connective tissue the larger the flex reflex and therefore the sharper the ‘cut’ feels to the patient. The reflex is a little impulse which passes through the liquid in the connective tissue and eases tension.
The lessening in tension surrounding the blood vessel walls allows more blood to flow into the injured area and so lessens the inflammation. Connective tissue manipulation helps in softening the connective tissue also allows more movement to occur without causing irritation and therefore pain. Treatment often begins further from the injured part gradually moving towards the starting place of the damage. The benefits of Connective Tissue Manipulation are cumulative. After the tension has been lowered by manipulation the decrease is maintained. Continued lessening in connective tissue tension happens with each extra manipulation.
The degree to which the reduction in connective tissue tension is maintained is conditional upon the amount of tension added to the body by the patient’s lifestyle. Connective Tissue Manipulation is a technique studied at postgraduate level in the United Kingdom and because of this it hasn’t spread very rapidly around the country. At the last calculation, there were something like two dozen Physiotherapists in the United Kingdom actively practising Connective Tissue Manipulation.
